private lessons

I am frequently asked if private lessons are better than a general class setting. The answer is not easy; it really depends on the situation. For example, we have many private lessons for special needs kids and adults because the general class can be too difficult for them. Private lessons are best utilized for supplementing the techniques, form and foundation that are taught in the general class. Relying on private lessons only for a typical student will not work to their advantage because a general class environment trains students of many body types and sizes. This is important because we never know who might attack us on the street. A person's chances of survival on the street increase when they learn to defend against different body types and sizes.

The focus in private lessons is to help the student perfect their empty-hand and weapons forms, learning the proper use of foundation for form and fighting, and improving some of the more complex techniques. Understanding how form relates to fighting is critical for proper execution of the techniques. Through private lessons, the student will improve on the proper angles and foot patterns necessary to execute the techniques. it is important to learn how to utilize the proper amount of force. These concepts take time and practice and can be achieved more efficiently in private lessons. The one-to-one setting helps the student develop because they don't have the pressure of other students watching or feeling they are slowing down the class.

One-on-one lessons also allow the instructor to go into more depth on the importance of total relaxation of the body, which is critical for generating power. Total relaxation of the body is very important, particularly for a smaller person to be able to use their full body weight to help neutralize and control a larger attacker. For a larger person, it is important to learn how to utilize the proper amount of force. These concepts take time and practice and can be achieved more efficiently in private lessons. The one-to-one setting helps the student develop because they don't have the pressure of other students watching or feeling they are slowing down the class.When the student is progressing through the belt ranks in San Soo, private lessons are more in depth when working on leverage, throws, sweeps and pressure points. Some students take advantage of private lessons to help perfect these areas. The ultimate goal in San Soo is to learn how to execute the techniques instinctively. It must be an automatic response which can be achieved only through repetition of the techniques taught in the San Soo group classes in conjunction with private lessons.

Many schools require students to take private lessons. This can be costly and not all students can afford the luxury. Private lessons are not required at Kung-Fu San Soo LA. If the student would like to enhance their training with one-to-one lessons, it is something they can discuss with their instructor. Our goal is to train our students to achieve maximum results for each individual student.
